October update

Date 12:50 PM

The pump for the well finally cleared customs and has now been installed.
This brought to light an issue that had not been foreseen, namely, the voltage delivered by the power company is too low for the pump to operate safely. It needs 230 volts and it was coming in at 195 on a Sunday when the community was not using a lot of electricity. This puts stress on the motor and could cause it to burn out.

Wally is working with Union Fenosa (the electrical company) to see what can be done to boost the voltage. Pray that this is possible with few complications.

Special Visit

Doris Friesen (on the right in photo below) visited CINAG in July and taught nutrition classes using soybean flour.
nutrition classes

Doris is a registered nurse who served as a missionary in Nicaragua with the Evangelical Mennonite Conference from 1974 to 1983.  She subsequently served in Paraguay for many years promoting health and nutrition.

Well update

The work on the well is done but the pump has been held up in customs.  Hurricane Ike has been to blame for the delay as the company they purchased the pump from is located in Houston.  The bill of sale required for the pump to clear customs has not arrived and Wally is having trouble reaching anyone at the company.

Pictures

Here is a picture of the finished guard shelter (you would have seen an under-construction photo of it in the June update).

Lester and Darlene

Lester and Darlene will be travelling to Nicaragua on October 29.  They plan to work at CINAG until mid March.

Willowlake Workteam

A workteam from Willowlake Baptist Church will be volunteering on site in November.  They are leaving November 5 and will stay until November 19.  They will assist with building an addition on the back side of the dining hall that will serve as a clinic, a classroom, and a dorm for volunteers.

Please pray for the team as they work on site and interact with the staff and residents of CINAG.

August update

Date 6:11 PM

Water

CINAG now has their own water supply!

On August 7th Wally informed us that water had finally been struck at 660 feet. The contractor had expected to hit water at 550 feet based on seismic maps of the region. They will drill deeper to ensure a good supply of water. The trenching for the pipe that connects the well to the reservoir is also completed. Once the contractors are at adequate depth they will install the casing and the pump and CINAG will have their own water supply. Praise be to God.

Many thanks to the donors that have made this project possible.

June 2008 – second update

Date 9:17 PM

well drillingThe well project has begun. After a one day delay due to rain (the truck was unable to make it up the steep grade to the CINAG grounds), the drilling has begun. The rig was set up on Tuesday and after two days of drilling they were at 50 feet and all was progressing well.

The very first building on the CINAG site (built in 2004) is being remodeled and expanded into office space.

A shelter is being built for the security guards and Max (the centre’s mascot).

Wally was able to work a deal with the neighborhood hardware store for use of their bobcat in exchange for training one of the store’s staff in its use. CINAG only had to pay for the fuel. Here you can see Wally doing some grading on the property.

May 2008 update

Date 10:50 AM

After almost a month in residence at CINAG, four siblings were split up by Family Services. They chose not to take Elizabeth’s advice to leave them since they were adjusting positively. Family services placed the boy in a boy’s facility and the two younger girls in a girl’s centre. The oldest girl (14) refused to leave, so she is still at CINAG.
Meanwhile two other sisters, ages 6 and 8, were placed in CINAG.
At present there are 14 girls between the ages 6 and 15.

residents

Some of the girls that have been in residence for a while have made positive changes.
Karen says that she thanks God for us and that God put us in her path. She has found in us the love of a father and mother that she never had. She believes that God put us in her life so that she would be able to serve him in a special way.

Residents

Veronica Loewen, Esther Wiebe, and other staff helped the girls prepare a special Mother’s Day program for the mothers of the community adjacent to CINAG. This encouraged the girls to use their creativity in preparing small gifts and to serve. It was a bit difficult for some because of the negative experiences they had with their own mothers. Reports are that the program went well and was greatly appreciated.

Veronica & Maura

We do thank God for Veronica; she has grown to love the girls and they appreciate her a lot. She came to volunteer for 3 months, so it will be difficult for the girls when she leaves. Pray for Veronica as she considers her future and whether to return for a longer term.

Oh yes, one more bit of news. The Centre now has a mascot – a much loved dog named Max.

Comments from second 2008 Workteam

Date 6:13 PM

Eliane Kushniryk, Swan River, MB
It is the people with the least who are prepared to share the most. They seem to be content with “enough”. They are not consumed with storing up extra, for tomorrow or next week, next month or next year.

Larry Giesbrecht, Portage la Prairie, MB
I’ve had a great time on this trip, first connecting with eleven friends (fellow team members) I didn’t know. Then on the second day here I witnessed Lester lead a couple to Christ. Something that struck me is the sincerity with which people worship.. The desire to learn more about Christ is so real. On the lighter side, one night at 2 AM, one side of my bed broke with a crash sending me to the floor. It took a bit to get my bearings, quite scary at first.

Laurel Scales, Swan River, MB
The people are so amazing. They are so warm and friendly. When we go to a church service they all shake hands and greet us or embrace us. The orphanage is a real haven for girls at risk; what a mission it has in this country. Love those girls.

John & Connie Reimer, Swan River, MB (former EMC missionaries in Nicaragua)
The Nicaraguan Mission Exposure team trip has been a walk through memory lane. Connie and I spent several years here in the seventies and early eighties. Communicating again with people we learned to love and working with them has been a blessing. There have been so many good things that God has done in the churches, CINAG and the country.

Workteam members share about their experiences so far

Date 8:45 PM

Peter & Janine Wieler and daughter Maddy:
Since we’ve arrived the adventures have not stopped; adventures in seeing more of our Father’s creation, falling in love with the people, and getting to know our own hearts. For a safe life-changing experience, try this.

Freda & John Schellenberg write:
The highlight of this working missions trip in Nicaragua, would be the prayer walk of the orphanage, praying for the cleansing of this place. Seeing how much work has been done is unbelievable. Also visiting a country church and having a service was a great experience. Even though I could not understand the language, the Holy Spirit was powerful. We serve a great God!

Catherine Thiessen:
A great experience! It was great to be back in a Spanish country teaching Vacation Bible School!

Danielle Fillion:
Each time I turn around there are new adventures, lessons, and different experiences around the corner.

David Thiessen:
I’m on a sabbatical leave from serving as a pastor to pastors in Canada. I came to shovel dirt, paint and build. It is great! But my highlight so far was speaking to a group of thirty pastors, many of whom make an incredible effort, in the blistering heat, to come to Managua for a pastor’s conference. Wow!

Sheldon Krahn:
The Lord is doing a great work at CINAG. There is work for everyone whether it is construction, painting, teaching, VBS or playing baseball!! I’ve been blessed.

Lee Fillion:
Some people say the world is a small community, with the invention of the internet, worldwide communication and global economy. My first week in Nicaragua on the missions exposure trip has shown me the inequality of living standards and lifestyles between Canada and Central America. The experience has been overwhelming, interesting and completely worthwhile. The most striking feature of the trip so far is the desire the children have to come to the day programs at the CINAG orphanage. The children and the Nicaraguan people in general are very generous with their love and affection despite their living conditions. The work at CINAG has already accomplished a tremendous amount through the endeavors of many people and the grace of God. I can also see the tremendous potential just waiting to blossom out from the CINAG site.

Debra and Bob Giesbrecht:
It is hard to explain the depth of our experience. Today we were blessed to see the first precious girl come to live at the orphanage, a safe place that is filled with God’s love. Wow! God is good.
